630 terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir between May 2018 and June 2021

Nityanand Rai said that Jammu and Kashmir continue to face violence at the hands of terrorists who are sponsored and supported by elements on the other side of the border.

New Delhi: Nityanand Rai said that Jammu and Kashmir continue to face violence at the hands of terrorists who are sponsored and supported by elements on the other side of the border.

Union Minister Nityanand Rai shared the data in the Upper House on Wednesday which says that at least 630 terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir between May 2018 and June 2021. The Union Minister of State for the Interior also told Rajya Sabha that 400 encounters occurred in the same time period which also resulted in the death of 85 members of the security personnel.

In his response to Congressional MP and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, Nityanand Rai said that Jammu and Kashmir continue to face violence at the hands of terrorists who are sponsored and supported by elements across the border.

“In 400 encounters, 85 security personnel were martyred and 630 terrorists were killed between May 2018 and June 2021,” Rai said in a written response. The minister mentioned that the government adopted a zero tolerance policy towards terrorism. Rai said the government took steps to strengthen the security apparatus, enforce strict laws against anti-national elements, and intensify cordon and search operations to address the challenges posed by terrorist organizations.

“The security forces also closely monitor people who try to support terrorists and initiate actions against them,” Rai added. The Union minister also said that Pakistan committed incidents of 664 cross-border ceasefire violations and shooting in Jammu and Kashmir as of June 2021. There were no reports of cross-border shooting or ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir in March.

Rai also told the Upper House that 1,948 people were arrested and another 34 convicted under the strict anti-terrorism Law on the Prevention of Illicit Activities (UAPA) in 2019 in response to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Tiruchi Siva.
