He said that several initiatives have recently been taken “to form new schools, departments and centers in the institute with multidisciplinary teaching and research programs”, which “fit very well with the overall objectives of NEP 2020.”

“Recently a new department called ‘Department of Energy Science and Engineering has been formed. The Research Program in Transportation and Injury Prevention (TRIPP), which has been running at the institute since 2002 as an interdisciplinary program, has become a full center in 2021. Another new center called ‘Center for Optics and Photonics’ ”. created that will focus on doctoral and graduate programs, including special programs for industry professionals, ”IIT-D said in a statement.

“The institute has also begun in recent years a School of Public Policy, a Department of Materials Science, a School of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering, and the Department of Design, which is all highly interdisciplinary in nature. The IIT Delhi Interdisciplinary Research School (SIRe), which has been in existence since 2017, also promotes interdisciplinarity. IIT-D said that while it already has “multiple interdisciplinary undergraduate programs,” “several more” were in the works. This involves a BTech program in Energy Engineering beginning in the academic year 2021-22, and a Bachelor of Design in 2022-23. He has also planned to begin a B. Tech. Program in Design from 2025-26.
