New Delhi. In an MiG-21 aircraft accident in Punjab on Thursday, an Air Force pilot named Squadron Leader Abhinav Choudhary was killed. The accident involving the Bison aircraft took place near Moga district in Punjab late on Thursday night, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said in a tweet.

“There was an aircraft accident last night involving a Bison aircraft of IAF in the western sector. The pilot, Sqn Ldr Abhinav Choudhary, sustained fatal injuries. IAF condoles the tragic loss and stands firmly with the bereaved family,” the Indian Air Force (IAF) posted on it’s official Twitter account.

The news agency ANI was quoted by Air Force officials as saying that the aircraft was flying for its daily routine training at the time of the accident.

This is the third MiG-21 crash accident this year. In March, an Air Force group captain died when the aircraft was flying for a combat training mission.

Earlier this year, in January, the IAF reported a MiG-21 plane crash near Suratgarh in Rajasthan. The Air Force had said that the aircraft had suffered a major technical flaw during a training flight in the western region.

Abhinav completed his education in a school in Meerut (UP) till class 7 and then his further schooling in Dehradun. He developed a keen interest in the army at an early age and went on to take a course at IMA, Dehradun. He was trained at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad and was posted at Pathankot Base since 2014.

Squadron Leader Abhinav Chaudhary married in December 2019. His wife Sonika has recently returned from France after completing a course.
